    The MN NACNS asks for your help to extend a HUGE thank you to Penny Messner, APRN, CNS, DNP for serving on the MN NACNS Board of Directors in 2019, 2020, and 2021. Penny, a cardiovascular CNS at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, has focused on improving pain management for the cardiovascular surgery patient, reducing hospital length of stay, anticoagulation management, improving venous thromboembolism prevention, and anticoagulation management to name a few. Over the years she has served as a preceptor and mentor to several of her CNS colleagues. Penny has provided great leadership to help the MN NACNS overcome many challenges the MN NACNS faced during the COVID-19 Pandemic to continue to move the MN NACNS forward. Thank you, Penny, for your dedication to the MN NACNS!

    The MN NACNS would like your help in thanking Shari Frueh, BSN, RN for her commitment as the 2021 Student Representative on the MN MN NACNS Board of Directors. Shari, a Clinical Resource Nurse at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, supports the GI Endoscopy units. She currently attends Winona State University in the Adult-Gerontology CNS Master’s Program. Thank you for helping the MN NACNS stay connected to CNS students in MN and your dedication to the MN NACNS. We wish you best with your educational journey and great success as a future CNS!

    She has served as a Diabetes Clinical Nurse Specialist for more than 20 years at the M Health Fairview’s University of Minnesota Medical Center.  She has served as a leader of diabetes care initiatives including at the system level focusing on standardizing diabetes care and nursing practice to ensure safe and effective care for this patient population.  She successfully led the University of Minnesota Medical Center to be the first academic medical center in the nation to achieve Joint Commission Certification for Advanced Diabetes Management.

     

    Carol’s prominence in the nursing community is demonstrated by her leadership roles in multiple national committees and organizations including the American Diabetes Association, the American Association of Diabetes Educators, and the National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists (NACNS).  She served as treasurer and president of NACNS and received the Brenda Lyons Leadership award from the NACNS.  She is an internationally recognized speaker on topics including inpatient diabetes management and professional competency.  She has authored/co-authored multiple journal articles, book chapters, and other publications on nursing topics.

    She is a consistent, recognized, dedicated leader and an outstanding recipient of the Mary Fran Tracy award.  Congratulations to Carol Manchester!  Very well deserved!
